Beoga: Hat Trick 2009 (click for more info)
The Hat Trick Concert Series returns to One Trick Pony for the Spring 2009 line-up! The series kicks off with Irish band Beoga, just in time for St. Patrick's Day! Beoga, the Irish word for "lively," are a five-piece traditional band featuring twin duelling accordians, a bodhran champion and piano. With the addition of one of Ireland's premier young singers, Niamh Dunne, Beoga are confirming their reputation as one of the most exciting acts to emerge from Ireland in recent years. A hat will be passed to benefit Cook Library Center, providing safe learning environments for children and adults in the Grandville Avenue neighborhood. That's Beoga, kicking off WYCE's Spring 2009 Hat Trick Concert Series at One Trick Pony, on Monday, March 9th at 7:30pm. The Hat Trick Concert series is sponsored by the law firm of Rhoades McKee, with support from Mark Swanson, maker of acoustic stringed instruments including guitars and bazoukis. Lodging for the series is provided by Peaches Bed & Breakfast. For more information, please visit the concert page at wyce.org.

Victor Wooten (click for more info)
WYCE and Calvin College present Victor Wooten and JD Blair in concert. "The Funktopus" is the self-appointed nickname of maniacal bassist Victor Wooten. Using his thumb the way a guitarist uses a pick, Wooten's mile-a-minute string-popping and dance-floor throbbing often sounds like the product of eight slithering arms. Wooten will be accompanied by longtime collaborator JD Blair, a funky drummer in his own right. Victor Wooten and JD Blair perform on Saturday, March 14th at 8pm at Calvin's Fine Arts Center. Franco

Sansi Fingomangoma
Francophonic 2008 via Sterns
a note about this track

The Congolese guitarist christened François Luambo, but known across Africa as Franco, was widely recognised as the continent's greatest musician, back in the years before Ali Farka Touré or Toumani Diabaté, and this intriguing compilation proves why. It's arranged chronologically, starting with the rough but powerful recordings Franco made at the age of 15, after he had come to attention as a brilliant street urchin who built his own guitar, and continues through his career as songwriter and bandleader through to his move to Europe after being jailed for obscenity.
