Calvin College hosts artist Patty Griffin in an eight PM show this Friday, April 27th. Of her latest recording she says, "Some of the most beautiful music I've ever heard is when you catch somebody singing to themselves. I wanted to make music that had that feeling." Calvin College is also bringing artist Jose Gonzalez to the Ladies Literary Club on Tuesday May first at 8:00pm. He’s a celeb in Scandinavia, and his album Veneer is in the top ten in Europe. Festival 2007 Film Competition offers local filmmakers an opportunity to exhibit their latest films at one of Michigan's largest summer arts festivals. This year's cash awards total over $1,100. Enter animation, documentary, narrative, music video and experimental films and videos. Deadline for film entries is May 5. This juried exhibition is held June 1-3, downtown Grand Rapids. Following a sold out WYCE show in 2006, The TARBOX RAMBLERS will make their return to Grand Rapids and Jukes Bar on Wednesday May 2. The Tarbox Ramblers have added a third member, and a number of new songs. All Music Guide calls their music a "train wreck of swamp blues, hillbilly, gospel, and woolly folk." Tickets for the Tarbox Ramblers are available at Jukes Bar, on Leonard St just west of 131, and at Vertigo Music. Doors at 6pm, show at 8. Support for the Tarbox Ramblers comes from Global Infusion and Jukes Bar.

And now for a WYCE concert announcement: Karl Denson is coming back to Grand Rapids Tuesday May 15, with the "Greyboy Allstars!" The "Greyboy Allstars" are back together promoting their first album in over a decade, entitled "What Happened to TV," produced by the original cast of Karl Denson, DJ Greyboy, and James Brown's Music Director Fred Wesley. The touring group is a talented group of seasoned musicians--headed by Karl Denson--prepared for anything! The "Allstars" mix old-school funk with a creative new-world style of good-time jazz, and they will be playing the Intersection Tuesday, May 15 at 9pm. Support for the legendary "Greyboy Allstars" concert is provided by The Intersection. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster, Vertigo Music, and Aris' Disc Shop. Juke's announces its third birthday celebration on Saturday, May 5 -- featuring local rootsgrass band, Rusty Thimbles, the powerbilly tunes of the Horse Cave Trio from Detroit, and the bang-and-twang sounds of the Gentleman Callers from Lansing. The evening will also include prizes, drink specials, and goofy party hats. Juke's is located at 506 Leonard NW in Grand Rapids. The music starts at 9:30, Saturday, May 5th.
