W@W Songcatcher & Who Hit John? (click for more info)
"Wednesdays at Wealthy" is a weekly series of films, discussions, performances and other community events held at the Community Media Center's Wealthy Theatre. The second Wednesday of each month is "WYCE at Wealthy." This month, we're putting a brand new spin on our night with a film screening AND a live performance. The presentation begins with the 2000 film _Songcatcher_. A university professor travels to rural America where she uncovers a wealth of music passed down by oral tradition. We round out the night with Kalamazoo acoustic roots combo "WHO HIT JOHN?", playing in support of their debut release _The Old Grey Road_. WYCE at Wealthy's presentation of "Songcatcher" and "WHO HIT JOHN?" takes place at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 10th, in the Koning Micro-Cinema at Wealthy Theatre, 1130 Wealthy Street southeast in Grand Rapids. Admission is free, and limited to 60 people, first-come-first-served.

As many as 1 in 8 adults in west Michigan cannot read or write above a ninth grade level.  Low literacy often prevents these individuals from accessing the rich social and economic resources in our community.

You can make a difference by becoming a tutor.  No special skills are needed - just an ability to read and write in English and a passion to help someone else do the same.

For more information, call Literacy Center of West Michigan at 616 459-5151 or sign up for a volunteer orientation online at "Literacy Center W M dot org."
