As many as 1 in 8 adults in west Michigan cannot read or write above a ninth grade level.  Low literacy often prevents these individuals from accessing the rich social and economic resources in our community.  

You can make a difference by becoming a tutor.  No special skills are needed - just an ability to read and write in English and a passion to help someone else do the same.

Grand Crossings Bridge Walk (click for more info)
You don’t have to go all the way to the Mackinac Bridge to join the annual Labor Day Bridge Walk this year -- the City of Grand Rapids is organizing its own bridge walk, as part of the new Active Michigan Summer initiative organized by the Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness, Health and Sports. Join your neighbors, invite your friends. Participants can walk as many as five miles, the equivalent of the Mackinac Bridge, and cross as many as seven Grand Rapids bridges. The route is wheelchair accessible and appropriate for all fitness levels. Please make sure you are physically able to participate. Mayor George K. Heartwell will lead the walk. The "Grand Crossings" bridge walk takes place on on Labor Day, September 1, 2008, at 8:00 a.m., at Ah-Nab-Awen Park, 210 Front Street. No sign-up is necessary.

The 2008 Annual AIDS Walk will take place across Michigan on Saturday, September 27 and Sunday, September 28. Rosa Parks Circle will be the meeting place for the walk in Grand Rapids. Registration will start at 9:00am and the walk begins at 11:00am.The annual AIDS Walk helps to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS and simultaneously helps raise funds for local AIDS services. Fulton St. Jewell’s band accompany her on tour and in the studio. Together they’re always seconding, but never detracting from, Eilen’s hushed vocals. A hat will be passed to benefit the Deaf & Hard of Hearing Services (DHHS) of Grand Rapids. DHHS empowers individuals who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing to reach their full potential in society through the elimination of communication barriers. National Public Lands Day River Clean Up- Grand River (click for more info)
September 27th is National Public Lands Day, a day set out to improve public lands for outdoor recreation, with volunteers assisting land managers in hands-on work. In observance of this day, The Grand River Watershed Clean Up is being held from 9:00am until noon, and volunteers are needed to help remove trash from the banks of the river.
