As many as 1 in 8 adults in west Michigan cannot read or write above a ninth grade level.  Low literacy often prevents these individuals from accessing the rich social and economic resources in our community.  

You can make a difference by becoming a tutor.  No special skills are needed - just an ability to read and write in English and a passion to help someone else do the same.

WYCE is pleased to welcome Jake's Music Festival back to Wealthy Theatre on September 6th. For the fourth consecutive year, local bands will get together for a concert to benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. The Festival was started by Tom and Mary Scheidel of Rockford and named for their son Jake who was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes 11 years ago when he was only six. Local artists MidLife Crisis, Truckstop Cobras, The Waxies, End Times Orchestra, Karisa Wilson, Todd Herring and Andy Holtgrieve will perform for the cause. Jake's Music Festival takes place Saturday, September 6th at Wealthy Theatre, beginning at 6:00 p.m. More information is available at

The 2008 Annual AIDS Walk will take place across Michigan on Saturday, September 27 and Sunday, September 28. Rosa Parks Circle will be the meeting place for the walk in Grand Rapids. Registration will start at 9:00am and the walk begins at 11:00am.The annual AIDS Walk helps to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS and simultaneously helps raise funds for local AIDS services. By participating in AIDS Walk Michigan you can take one giant step in the fight against AIDS in your own community. Eilen Jewell and her band will be kicking off WYCE's Fall Hat Trick Concert series on Monday, September 8th at 7:30pm, at One Trick Pony, 136 E. Fulton St. Jewell’s band accompany her on tour and in the studio. Together they’re always seconding, but never detracting from, Eilen’s hushed vocals. A hat will be passed to benefit the Deaf & Hard of Hearing Services (DHHS) of Grand Rapids. DHHS empowers individuals who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing to reach their full potential in society through the elimination of communication barriers. National Public Lands Day River Clean Up- Grand River (click for more info)
September 27th is National Public Lands Day, a day set out to improve public lands for outdoor recreation, with volunteers assisting land managers in hands-on work. In observance of this day, The Grand River Watershed Clean Up is being held from 9:00am until noon, and volunteers are needed to help remove trash from the banks of the river.
