The third annual GeekAid is a family music and art festival to raise funds for art and technology education. This year's festival will feature live music, including headline performances from Karisa Wilson, Ralston Bowles, and The Truckstop Cobras. There will be food and beverages and a silent art auction featuring works from a large variety of local artists and galleries. All proceeds from the art auction, and any donations received will support the GeekAid scholarship fund. Scholarships will be awarded to select, graduating Grand Rapids High School students that will be continuing their education in areas of technology and arts. GeekAid Music and Art Festival will be at Riverside Park on Saturday, August 16th from Noon to 8:30pm. Admission to this family-oriented event is Free. More information is available online at

Local First kicks off its "Eat Local Challenge" with a “how-to” party -- demonstrating food's journey from the farm to the plate. WYCE is pleased to serve as media sponsor for the first-ever Lake Effect Festival of Music. This outdoor, family music festival will feature performances by a diverse group of local musicians. The Hawks & Owls old-time string band will provide traditional folk and bluegrass. Drew Nelson will bring his new-generation folk. Bless You Boys will crank things up on the rock end of the spectrum. Edye Evans Hyde will smooth things out with her jazz vocals. And 2008 Blues Music Award nominees Root Doctor will bring out the R&B and soul. As many as 1 in 8 adults in west Michigan cannot read or write above a ninth grade level.  Low literacy often prevents these individuals from accessing the rich social and economic resources in our community.  

You can make a difference by becoming a tutor.  No special skills are needed - just an ability to read and write in English and a passion to help someone else do the same.
