As many as 1 in 8 adults in west Michigan cannot read or write above a ninth grade level.  Low literacy often prevents these individuals from accessing the rich social and economic resources in our community.  


You can make a difference by becoming a tutor.  No special skills are needed - just an ability to read and write in English and a passion to help someone else do the same.

The Asian Health Outreach Foundation presents the 2008 West Michigan Asian Film Festival. This film festival will feature 10 notable films from different Asian countries once a month at Celebration Cinema in Grand Rapids. The festival kicks off with the showing of "Imelda", a film on the former Philippine First Lady Imelda Marcos' rise to power and fall from grace. "Imelda" will be shown on Sunday, March 30, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at the Celebration Cinema - Knapp corner, East Beltline, 2121 Celebration NW.Beginning 2:00 p.m. Information is available by calling Minnie Morey at 616-855-6617. WYCE celebrates seven years of the Hat Trick Concert series with a visit from "Two Loons For Tea", a four piece group tied together by the imaginative duo of Sarah Scott and Jonathan Kochmer with hauntingly beautiful vocals, hypnotic melodies and colorfully offbeat lyrics. Two Loons For Tea will perform on March 24th at One Trick Pony, 136 E. Fulton St. at 7:30 p.m. A hat will be passed to benefit Circle Pine Center, A non-profit summer camp and weekend retreat in Delton, Mi that focuses on cooperation, peace, social justice, the environment, art , music and drama. The Hat Trick Concert series is sponsored by the law firm of Rhoades McKee, with support from Mark Swanson, maker of acoustic stringed instruments including guitars and bazoukis. Lodging for the series is provided by Peaches Bed & Breakfast.

Women's Chorus presents Ulali (click for more info)
The Grand Rapids Women's Chorus presents Ulali, a women's acapella group with special appearance the Snowbird Singers and the Woodland Singers. The evening also includes a pre-concert lecture on preserving indiginous languages, hand drums and medicine wheel teachings. THe lecture is from 6:00 pm to 6:45 pm then Ulali will perform at 7:30pm on Saturday March 22nd at the St. Cecilia Music Center, 24 Ransom NE.
