WYCE and Calvin College present gospel and soul legend Mavis Staples, in concert on February 20th. On this tour, Mavis Staples is reworking decades worth of her own original material as well as that of her family's band -- the Staples Singers. She performs with a full band, bridging many styles of music, from Gospel to R&B to Blues. Mavis Staples will play at Calvin College Fine Arts Center on Wednesday, February 20th at 8:00pm. ARTS JAM 2008 is a benefit for Grand Rapids Public Schools Art and Music programs. There will be a two hour concert with local musicians, Ralston Bowles, Nobody's Darlin', MacRaven, Aparicion, Bless You Boys and Java Jive. Arts Jam 2008 will take place on February 24th at St Cecilia Music Center from 2-5PM. Tickets are available from the Arts Council of Greater Grand Rapids at 459-2787.

This will be an evening of music and dance paying tribute to the king of Reggae music. Performers paying their respect to the king of Reggae music will be Grand Rapids' own Mystic Dub and from Kalamazoo, Zion Lion. Caribbean food and craft vendors will be on site selling their goods. WYCE and the West Michigan Blues Society are proud to announce the return of the Cabin Fever Blues Series, sponsored by the law firm of Varnum Riddering Schmidt & Howlett. The next Cabin Fever show is The Chicago Rhythm and Blues Kings, a seasoned six piece band previously known as the Mellow Fellows. Tenor saxman Terry Ogolini and trumpeter Don Tenuto still comprise one of the Chicago's most dangerous horn sections; bassist Bob Halaj and guitarist David Mick continue to cook up sizzling rhythms, anchored by drummer Willie Hayes. The Chicago Rhythm and Blues Kings will perform Saturday at Billy's Lounge in Eastown, February 16th, the Show starts at 9:00 PM. All proceeds benefit WYCE and the Blues Society. Lodging for Cabin Fever artists provided by Baymont Inn & Suites of Byron Center. Additional support provided by Pilar's Cafe and River City Slim's.

As many as 1 in 8 adults in west Michigan cannot read or write above a ninth grade level.  Low literacy often prevents these individuals from accessing the rich social and economic resources in our community.  


You can make a difference by becoming a tutor.  No special skills are needed - just an ability to read and write in English and a passion to help someone else do the same.

The newly formed West Michigan Youth Ballet will present their debut performance, and adaptation of the children's book, "Goodnight Moon", "The Joplin Ballet" and "Soiree's Musicales".
