WYCE announces the return of the Hat Trick Concert Series on September 10th at 7:30pm at One Trick Pony, 136 E. Fulton in downtown Grand rapids. The first show of the series features a performance from Abra Moore and Will Sexton. Abra can hardly be considered an emerging artist, she is a founding member of Poi Dog Pondering, with a grammy nomination for her release Strangest Places. Moore’s songs have appeared in more than 25 films and television shows. A Hat will be passed that evening to benefit Kids’ Food Basket. A program that fights hunger and malnutrition by providing take-home dinners for undernourished children in Grand Rapids Public Schools. The Hat Trick series is presented by Rockford Construction and The Wheeler Family Foundation, with support from Mark Swanson, maker of acoustic stringed instruments including guitars and bazoukis. Camp Blodgett presents Sons of Beaches on Tuesday, August 21, the last show of their Acoustic Sunset Series. The SOB's perform original music and cover some Jimmy Buffett, the Eagles and Alan Jackson. Gates open at 6:00pm, music starts at 7:30. As many as 1 in 8 adults in west Michigan cannot read or write above a ninth grade level.  Low literacy often prevents these individuals from accessing the rich social and economic resources in our community.  

You can make a difference by becoming a tutor.  No special skills are needed - just an ability to read and write in English and a passion to help someone else do the same.

Art Out Loud is a summer concert at the UICA featuring Mid-Life Crisis and Domestic Problems. Local artists will create paintings live in response to the music (to be raffled later that evening); other artists include glass blowers, a henna artist, a caricature artist, and prayer flag making. Art Out Loud takes place on August 22nd fro 6-10pm and will be raising funds for UICA's Artworks program that offers opportunities to youth.
