As many as 1 in 8 adults in west Michigan cannot read or write above a ninth grade level.  Low literacy often prevents these individuals from accessing the rich social and economic resources in our community.  

You can make a difference by becoming a tutor.  No special skills are needed - just an ability to read and write in English and a passion to help someone else do the same.

Art Out Loud is a summer concert at the UICA featuring Mid-Life Crisis and Domestic Problems. Local artists will create paintings live in response to the music (to be raffled later that evening); other artists include glass blowers, a henna artist, a caricature artist, and prayer flag making. Art Out Loud takes place on August 22nd fro 6-10pm and will be raising funds for UICA's Artworks program that offers opportunities to youth. On Thursday August 16, local musician and songwriter Karisa Wilson will release her debut album "Little Girl" with a release party at Wealthy Theater. Karisa has performed with many local groups over the years, but will present this solo project with full backing band in a very special night of music, with opening performance by Lux Land. The concert starts at 7:30pm. Tickets are available at Schuler Books stores, Beat Goes On, and Fresh, a new music shop on Wealthy Street in Eastown.
