April is National Child Abuse Awareness and Prevention Month, and the Child and Family Resource Council is hosting a number of events to raise awareness of this critical social issue and engage the community in action. One of the activities is the 19th Annual Service to Children Awards on Saturday, April 14 at Fountain Street Church. The Awards will feature Dave Pelzer, internationally-recognized child abuse survivor and #1 New York Times best-selling author; he will share his inspirational presentation, "Help Yourself.” More information is available at 454-HOPE.

Following a sold out WYCE show in 2006, The TARBOX RAMBLERS will make their return to Grand Rapids and Jukes Bar on Wednesday May 2. The Tarbox Ramblers have added a third member, and a number of new songs. All Music Guide calls their music a "train wreck of swamp blues, hillbilly, gospel, and woolly folk." Tickets for the Tarbox Ramblers are available at Jukes Bar, on Leonard St just west of 131, and at Vertigo Music. Doors at 6pm, show at 8. Festival 2007 Film Competition offers local filmmakers an opportunity to exhibit their latest films at one of Michigan's largest summer arts festivals. This year's cash awards total over $1,100. Enter animation, documentary, narrative, music video and experimental films and videos. Deadline for film entries is May 5. This juried exhibition is held June 1-3, downtown Grand Rapids. The True North Film Festival is a new filmmaking competition and microcinema showcase based in Grand Rapids. Applications will be taken at Wealthy Theatre through April 13th. Contestants draw a title for their production and have the summer to create it. The resulting films will be screened at the September 14th festival at Wealthy Theatre.
