Dan Auerbach

Whispered Words (Pretty Lies)
Keep It Hid 2009 via Nonesuch
a note about this track

On his solo debut, Black Keys singer and guitarist Dan Auerbach takes a simple approach: 'I just wanted to do the things I loved.' For Auerbach, that means combining elements of bluegrass a la the Stanley Brothers, mournful country balladry, Memphis-style R&B, fuzzed-out psychedelic rock and low-down blues on this collection of 14 original tunes, which Auerbach self-produced and recorded with friends and family at his family at his newly built studio, Akron Analog.

Jessica Lea Mayfield

For Today
With Blasphemy So Heartfelt 2008 via Thirty Tigers
a note about this track

Rather than trying to make herself happy, Jessica immersed herself in darkness and, at age 15, recorded her first album White Lies in her brother's bedroom, printing only 100 copies. One of those copies fell into the hands of Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys. After an introduction, Mayfield and Auerbach hit the studio, laying the foundation of her debut album With Blasphemy So Heartfelt.

Tortoise

High Class Slim Came Floatin' In
Beacons Of Ancestorship 2009 via Thrill Jockey
a note about this track

This is their first new record in over five years. Tortoise have been expanding the definition of rock music for over fifteen years. "Beacons" gives nods to techno, punk, electro, lo-fi noise, cut up beats, heavily processed synths, and mournful, elegiac dirges.
