Thursday, May 9th: RODRIGO Y GABRIELA
Rodrigo y Gabriela are a Mexican classical guitar duo whose music is influenced by a number of genres including nuevo flamenco, rock, and heavy metal. The duo's recordings consist largely of instrumental duets on the flamenco guitar. Before becoming the most visible acoustic guitar duo in the world, Rodrigo y Gabriela -- who met when they were 15 -- bonded over heavy metal while growing up in Mexico City. They have since become a charting, internationally renowned recording and concert act.
In 1999, the duo moved to Dublin, Ireland and turned toward busking on the streets, a move that enhanced their reputation and helped land them several contacts. Damien Rice, a new found friend and fellow-busker, invited them on tour and in 2003 Rodrigo y Gabriela released their international debut record with 2003’s “Re-Foc.” Their self-titled third album was released in 2006 and debuted at the top of the Irish music charts.
After three world tours, 4 studio albums, and music featured on many TV shows and movie scores, the duo reappeared in 2019 with their fifth album, “Mettavolution,” which was recently added to WYCE’s library.
