Wednesday, January 16th: MOGWAI
Mogwai (“Mog-Way”) are a Scottish post-rock band, formed in 1995 in Glasgow, Scotland.
Their typical style features lengthy guitar-based instrumental pieces that feature dynamic contrast, melodic bass guitar lines, and heavy use of distortion and effects.
Mogwai, the Cantonese word for “monster,” cites influences from bands like Fugazi, My Bloody Valentine, Sonic Youth, Pixies, The Cure and post-rock pioneers Slint. Mogwai's style has easily identifiable connections to genres such as shoegaze, math rock, and art rock.
Their 1997 debut, Young Team, experimented with the definition of post rock, but their sound grew and became more diverse, adding elements of electronica, as well as adding strings, piano, flutes, and synths.
In 2005, Mogwai began their soundtrack career, writing soundtracks for films, TV series, and video games.
Over their 24 year career, they have released 6 soundtracks and 9 studio albums. Their most recent album, Every Country’s Sun was released in 2017.
