Monday November 5th: JOHN MEDESKI
Anthony John Medeski is an American jazz keyboards player and composer.
Medeski is best known for his work with Medeski Martin & Wood. The trio formed in New York in 1991 playing gigs at The Village Gate. Since the mid-1990s they have toured steadily in both national and international funk, jazz, and jam music scenes.
John Medeski plays the acoustic piano and an eclectic array of keyboards, including the Hammond B3 organ, melodica, mellotron, clavinet, ARP String Ensemble, Wurlitzer electric piano, Moog Voyager Synthesizer, Wurlitzer 7300 Combo Organ, Vox Continental Baroque organ, and Yamaha CS-1 Synthesizer (a "kids' toy"), among others.
Medeski performs in a range of musical styles, from accessible groove based funk and jazz to more experimental music and has appeared on over 300 recordings.
His new project is Mad Skillet and features guitarist Will Bernard, drummer Terence Higgins and sousaphone master Kirk Joseph. The band originally came together for a late-night gig during the 2015 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival.
“Something happens there. There’s something in the air, the water, the food,” said Medeski of the Crescent City. “Every time we play, it really is magical. We get together and this thing lifts. It has a life of its own, beyond any of us. There’s a lot of ESP in New Orleans music. There’s a certain feel that New Orleans guys have that you can’t get anywhere else.”
