Ry Cooder’s new album The Prodigal Son arrives Friday, May 11th. The album’s 11 tracks include three Ry Cooder originals along with a carefully selected collection of vintage blues, gospel and bluegrass by the likes of The Pilgrim Travelers, The Stanley Brothers and Blind Willie Johnson.
The virtuoso slide guitarist and songwriter has built a career exploring an eclectic range of North American musical styles. His early years as a session player included work with Captain Beefheart, Randy Newman, The Rolling Stones, Taj Mahal, and Gordon Lightfoot.
Cooder debuted as a solo artist in 1970, and has since branched out into composing music for films and producing the Grammy-winning 1997 documentary album Buena Vista Social Club.
Ry Cooder is on the road this summer, appearing at Ann Arbor’s Michigan Theatre June 22nd and Chicago’s Thalia Hall of June 24.
