BARRENCE WHITFIELD & THE SAVAGES
Barrence Whitfield, of Barrence Whitfield & The Savages, was born Barry White in Jacksonville, Florida. He started singing in gospel choir as a child and moved on to playing drums in rock and funk bands as a teen. Out of the gate in 1984, the young singer was described as "a soul screamer in the spirit of Little Richard, Wilson Pickett, and Solomon Burke” with the band described by Allmusic as “raucous and rough, in high gear from the moment they hit the stage.”
Barrence Whitfield & The Savages was given new life by Bloodshot Records, who released 2013’s Dig Thy Savage Soul!
The band’s new album, Soul Flowers of Titan, arrives via Bloodshot this Friday.
