Guitarist Julian Lage releases the new album Modern Lore on February 2nd.
Julian Lage is a former child prodigy who has become a distinctive improvisational voice as sideman and bandleader. The 30-year-old California native first came to broader attention as the subject of the Oscar-nominated documentary short film Jules At Eight. His formative years found him going neck-to-neck with David Grisman, Carlos Santana, Bela Fleck, and Doc Watson, all while training at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.
At 21, Lage released his first album as bandleader, which also received a Grammy nomination for Best Contemporary Jazz Album. He later served as sideman on 4 albums with vibraphonist Gary Burton and made duo projects with Wilco’s Nels Cline and Punch Brothers’ Chris Eldridge.
For the new release, Julian Lage is backed in trio by double bassist Scott Colley (known for his work with Herbie Hancock and Pat Metheny) and drummer Kenny Wollesen (of Tom Waits and Norah Jones fame).
