Gord Downie, lead singer and lyricist of Canadian Music Hall of Famers The Tragically Hip, passed away Wednesday following an extended battle with a form of brain cancer.
Downie was the face and voice of a band whose discography sold more than eight million copies, won 16 Juno awards (the most of any band ever), and was honored among the Order of Canada.
Gord Downie also released five solo albums including a collaboration with Canadian band The Sadies and the Juno Award-winning 2016 album Secret Path, which was also adapted as a graphic novel and animated television film. The project reflected Downie’s support of Canada’s Indigenous People, telling the true story of a young Anishinaabe who died in 1966 while trying to return home after escaping from an Indian residential school.
The Tragically Hip completed a 15 show farewell tour in August of this year, with nearly 12 million viewers tuning in for the CBC’s broadcast of the band’s final concert.
