Dream pop artist Jay Som performs this Friday at the Pyramid Scheme. Jay Som is the musical project of Melina Duterte. Born and raised in Oakland, California to Filipino immigrant parents, Duterte began playing music at a young age. She enrolled in community college to study music production and soon after began recording in her bedroom. It was in this makeshift bedroom studio that she began recording music as Jay Som, a moniker that Duterte pulled from a baby name generator. In 2015 she released Turn Into to critical acclaim. Duterte recorded the album in her bedroom studio and she also supplied all of the instrumentation herself.

Following the album's release she went on tour opening for acts Japanese Breakfast and Mitski. Jay Som's follow up Everybody Work was released this past March to even more acclaim. As with the first record, Duterte recorded all of the latest in her bedroom studio and played all of the instruments herself. For Duterte this album is all about "finding some peace within yourself, in the stages of adult life where you have to settle and find what is right for you."  Along with her show at the Pyramid Scheme, Jay Som also joins Rebecca Ruth live on-air in our studio at 2:00 P.M. this afternoon!
