Former lead singer of Gossip, Beth Ditto's first solo album Fake Sugar was released this past month. Ditto formed Gossip with Nathan "Brace Pain" Howdeshell and Kathy Mendonça in 1999. The band were signed to Kill Rock Stars and in 2001 they released their first album That's Not What I Heard. Following the exit of Mendonça from the band, Hannah Billie was added as the new drummer. In 2006 the band released Standing in the Way of Control, which would become their big breakthrough in the UK earning the band a Gold Record.
With their follow up record 2009's Music for Men, the group would find major success worldwide. Propelled by the hit single "Heavy Cross" the album would earn platinum and gold certifications throughout Europe. In 2016, Ditto announced that Gossip would be splitting up and that she planned on focusing on a solo career and her clothing line. Ditto's clothing line, which she just launched, is focused on creating hip vintage-inspired clothing for plus sized individuals. Ditto had been working on her solo album for two years and it will be a departure for her stylistically. Ditto describes Fake Sugar as "my southern record but not necessarily a country record".
