Washed Out's third studio album Mister Mellow arrived June 30. Washed Out is the stage name for Ernest Greene, a Georgia native, who began recording under that moniker in 2009. His 2009 single "Feel It All Around" was released to major critical and commercial success and  is universally recognized as the theme song to the IFC show Portlandia

Along with artists Neon Indian and Toro y Moi, Washed Out was a major figure in the birth of the music subgenre Chillwave. In the words of Slant critic Kevin Liedel: the genre combines “faded soundscapes, dreamy lyrical reflections, and warm, anachronous instrumentation meant to invoke the analog glow of late-’70s/early-’80s slow jams".

Like any new musical trend, a backlash soon emerged and many critics called the genre dead. This did not stop genre pioneer Greene from achieving continued success.  Washed Out released Mister Mellow as a visual album, with the full album accompanying a short film starring Kyle Mooney from Saturday Night Live.
