Our 500th Artist of the Day is none other than Scottish alternative rock pioneers The Jesus and Mary Chain. In March, brothers William and Jim Reid released their first album in nearly 20 years, Damage and Joy. The LP was well received and produced by Youth (aka Martin Glover), founding member of the Killing Joke who has produced for several European artists, including multiple albums by The Verve. Damage and Joy had been in the works since 2007, when the band first reunited to perform at Coachella.
The band originally formed in 1983 after the Reid brothers spent years crafting their ideal sound. Their early years were marred with unsuccessful shows and disinterest in their noisy, feedback laden take on 60’s pop. However, their debut Psychocandy was unanimously adored by critics and allowed the band to fully realize their sound. Their all-black, dejected aesthetic and layered, weaving guitars are touchstones for a decade of shoegaze bands.
