Fans of modern classical music and indie pop may want to find their way to Calvin College tonight to hear Kishi Bashi. The accomplished performer and composer layers violin over propulsive percussion, synth lines, and his sweet, airy vocals. This is Kishi Bashi’s second performance at Calvin as he brings songs from the 2016 release, Sonderlust. The album was produced by Chris Taylor of Grizzly Bear. In an interview during a KEXP performance, Kishi Boshi’s admits that the new, more danceable sound of Sonderlust stemmed from learning Ableton Live picking up vocal techniques from soul singers.

Kishi Bashi is currently based in Athens, Georgia and formerly toured with the band of Montreal. Although writing primarily written on violin, his music has evolved to incorporate loops, samples, synths, and other aspects of modern pop.
