Since September 2, 2008, our weeky brew & view movie night has been going strong every Tuesday night. Partnering with our neighbors down the street (The Meanwhile Bar), we've often strived to bring you cult classics, crowd favorites, and also the occasional cinematic gem that you may not have heard of, or perhaps never seen on the big screen. This week's film has been requested & championed by one of our longest-running organizers & volunteers for the series. After a successful fundraising effort at the concessions stand, on the big screen we finally bring you: Gummo!

Written & directed by filmmaker Harmony Korine (also known for Spring Breakers, Julien Donkey Boy, Kids, & the Dogme 95 independent filmmaking movement). The story follows the lonely residents of a tornado-stricken Ohio town as they wander the deserted landscape trying to fulfill their boring, nihilistic lives. Teen friends Tummler and Solomon navigat the ruins of their city, populated by the deformed, disturbed and perverted. When not gunning down stray cats for a few bucks, the boys pass their time getting stoned on household inhalants. Elsewhere, the mute Bunny Boy dons rabbit ears and is bullied by kids half his age, and sisters Dot and Helen dodge a local creep. The film is rated R for pervasive depiction of anti-social behavior of juveniles, including violence, substance abuse, sexuality, and language.

"Extraordinary... fascinating and disturbing."
"A hugely funny black comedy... stunningly original."
"Gummo is alive in a way that few films are."

The Meanwhile Film Series is a collaboration of Wealthy Theatre & The Meanwhile Bar. The weekly brew & view every Tuesday night for over 10 years! If you are a member of the Community Media Center, you can order drinks at our bar and enjoy a local Michigan beer, a glass of wine, or a mixed drink while watching your favorite cult classics. Bar privileges are available only to CMC Members.
