Chiaroscuro International Film Series 2023 Season

Chiaroscuro International Film Series, now in its 18th year, announces its 2023 series theme: Absence/Presence. The series presents a selection of award-winning films from New Zealand, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Japan, Finland/France and Germany. Using a variety of narrative, cinematic and thematic devices, each film in the 2023 series explores the idea of absence/presence - a universal experience as the world emerges from a life altering pandemic.

January 8 
Waru (Gardiner et al, 2017) New Zealand
Following the death of a child, eight Māori women risk everything for the greater good of their community.

Quo Vadis, Aida? (Zbanic, 2020) Bosnia and Herzegovina
Ma Aida is a UN translator. When the Serbian army takes over her town, her family shelters in the UN camp.

February 5
Asako I and II (Hamaguchi, 2018) Japan
Asako loves Baku, a free spirit who suddenly disappears. Later, Asako meet Ryohei, who looks just like Baku.

February 19
Le Havre (Kaurismäki, 2011) Finland/France
When a young African refugee arrives in the city of Le Havre, an aging shoe shiner welcomes him into his home.

March 5
Transit (Petzold, 2018) Germany
A man escaping occupied France falls in love with the wife of a dead author, whose identity he has assumed.

The Chiaroscuro International Film Series is a non-profit cultural and educational organization that fosters a deeper understanding of world cultures through the medium of film. Chiaroscuro presents films in a setting that encourages discussion and enjoyment through a shared social experience.
