posted by Chris Kotcher on 04/14/2020

Performing live in Studio X on 88.1fm WYCE; Calexico and Iron & Wine. WYCE is Grand Rapids independent community radio station; listener sponsored and volunteer-powered. Broadcasting locally on 88.1fm and around the world online. To learn how you can support, visit: http://www.wyce.org/donate

Calexico and Iron & Wine first made an artistic connection with In the Reins, the 2005 EP that brought Sam Beam, Joey Burns and John Convertino together. Their paths diverged, but they kept in touch when they could. They often talked about rekindling their collaboration in the studio and on stage, but it wasn’t until last year that their schedules aligned, which allowed them to create a new album: Years to Burn. http://ironandwine.com/calexico-iron-wine-upcoming-album-and-tour/  Sam Beam is a singer-songwriter who has been creating music as Iron & Wine for over a decade. Through the course of seven albums, numerous EPs and singles, and the initial volumes of an Archive Series - Iron & Wine has captured the emotion and imagination of listeners with distinctly cinematic songs. http://www.ironandwine.com/home/

Lyrics: Well, my father built a mansion on the mountain I was chasing my Teresa around the tree We were kicking precious stones Sinking ships and swimming home Only crazy for the comfort of our clothes Well, my father built a mansion on the mountain My Teresa dragged a rag across my brow She said, "The weather's never failed The wind can only blow your hair" And I believed her well enough but didn't care Everyone knows and they don't know Chandelier light ain't love It just watches the time go Across the marble floor Out the order mail door Even rain can hear it running off the road Well, my father built a mansion on the mountain My Teresa threw me kisses through the core We read the writing on the wall Braced each other for the fall There's only one way off the mountain after all Well, my father built a mansion on the mountain It was me and my Teresa against the world We took all the river had to give Broke the bed and bought a grill But left the mountain mansion, nothing to forget
