Monday, May 13th: JAMILA WOODS

Jamila Woods is a Chicago-based American singer, songwriter and award-winning poet. Her work focuses on themes of Black ancestry, Black feminism, and Black identity, with recurring emphases on self-love and the City of Chicago. Her inspirations include Gwendolyn Brooks and Toni Morrison, as well as Erykah Badu and Kendrick Lamar.

A vital part of the creative artist community in her native Chicago, she raised her profile through collaborations with the likes of Macklemore & Ryan Lewis and Chance the Rapper. As a solo artist, she specializes in an accessible yet non-commercial form of R&B that is rooted in soul and wholly modern.

Her debut album, “HEAVN,” appeared in 2016, which featured collaborations with Chance the Rapper, Noname, Saba, Lorine Chia, Kweku Collins and Donnie Trumpet. Her second album, “LEGACY! LEGACY!,” was released earlier this week and each one of its songs was influenced and titled after a writer or artist of color, from Nikki Giovanni to Muddy Waters.

“LEGACY! LEGACY!” was recently added to WYCE’s library.
