Computer Lab Acceptable Use Policy
Using the Lab
- Lab-user accounts are available for members by the request at the front reception desk. One working day is required to activate lab account. CMC Orientation is a prerequisite for lab use.
- All users must have their own Lab-user name and password. Members may not share their user name and passwords with other users or sign on to more than one computer at a time.
- Members are not allowed to install software on lab computers.
- The computer hard drives may not be used to store downloaded or member-created information. Data must be saved on floppy disk or ZIP disk. Both are available for purchase at the front desk.
- Members may not reconfigure computer settings or change appearance of the desktop image.
- Priority use for the lab is prearranged classes. Unscheduled hours are available for open lab use. Certain lab stations are able to be reserved for students working on projects assigned in CMC classes. Unreserved stations are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Certain hours may be posted as having a lab assistant available. The lab schedule will be kept up-to-date on the CMC website or you can get the schedule by calling the CMC. After e-mail is established and registered at the front desk, CMC will send out regular lab information updates electronically through e-Catalyst.
- Printing is permitted at 10 cents per page or 5 cents per page for students and low-income members. Payment must be handled at the front desk on the day the printing occurs. All printed pages generated by an individual should be paid for whether they are kept or discarded. Abusers of this printer “honor system” can have their printing privileges revoked.
- Headphones may be obtained at the front desk for those who wish to listen to audio files.
- No food or beverages are permitted in the lab and hands must be clean before using any lab station.
- Minors are not allowed in the lab without a guardian unless they have specific written permission on file. A Minor Authorization Form is available.
- The scanner is connected only to the adjacent computer station. Those who are not using the scanner should avoid choosing that work station or give it up to those who need to scan images.
- Members must always log-off at the end of their session.
- Classes are regularly scheduled on a variety of computer topics. Classes are encouraged to help you get the most out of your lab experience. Some classes have associated fees and/or require extra materials.
Using the Internet
The Community Media Center does not censor access to material nor protect users from controversial information. Parents of minor children must assume responsibility for their children's use of the Internet through the CMC's connection. The CMC assumes no responsibility for any damages, direct or indirect, arising from use of its server or from its connections to other Internet services through our service provider.
- Profane, obscene or injurious language, text or graphics that is purposely directed at another person or purposely displayed for public view will not be tolerated. Materials brought up on any computer in the lab are considered on display for public viewing.
- Members must adhere to federal, state and local laws governing the content, transmission and dissemination of information. Please read the signs posted around the lab regarding laws about the distribution of pornography. Anyone using the computer lab for illegal activity will be banned from using of the lab.
The Community Media Center supports the right of all members to use the lab without discrimination and with the safety and peace of all people in mind. In order to properly maintain a clean, safe and comfortable environment for our members and employees, the Community Media Center Board of Directors has adopted the following rules and responsibilities. It is the charge of the CMC staff to see that these rules and responsibilities are properly enforced so that the facility can be used to the fullest by all persons. Members who violate these rules and responsibilities will be asked to leave the lab and may be suspended from further use.
Lab Rules and Responsibilities
- Lab users are expected to respect the rights of others and must refrain from willfully annoying other persons.
- We encourage the proper use and care of all Lab equipment. Members must not damage or deface CMC property.
- The Lab is here to be used by members and the CMC cannot allow loitering of any kind in the lab.
- To protect the comfort level of all, patrons must not engage in loud or boisterous conduct.
- Members or their guests who are in a state of intoxication and/or who act in a manner, which causes a public disturbance will be asked to leave the building.
- We expect patrons to be considerate of each other — profane, obscene or injurious language that is directed at another person cannot be tolerated.
- Lab facilities are open only during CMC operating hours. Members must respect staff requests to leave promptly at the end of open lab hours so everyone is out before a scheduled use or before the building is locked up for the day.
- Because the Lab is a community facility, members are expected to wear proper attire. No person shall enter or remain in the building without wearing a shirt and shoes.
- While we understand that there are varying levels of personal hygiene, members who interfere with other members' use of our facility because of extremely poor personal hygiene will be asked to leave.
